Introduction

You can make yourself, your property, your family and your property safer by taking a few simple crime prevention steps. The information that we have provided here will help you to do that.
It is important to remember that most crime is actually against the property, not the people in it. The majority of crime is 'spur of the moment' action often in response to an opportunity.

In order for a crime to occur three things need to come together:
  • a criminal
  • a victim
  • an opportunity
take any one of these away and the crime will not occur.

The opportunity may be an unlocked window or door, or valuables left on display. Crime prevention action can include improving security on windows and doors, removing items from display and joining a local Neighbourhood Watch.

Leaflets

There are a number of leaflets and booklets available which give good advice on home security. These are usually available from your police crime prevention officer. Some of these are available electronically and we have provided them here for you.

See leaflets page.

Videos

There are a number of good home security videos available, which have been produced by a variety of sources and police forces. As crime prevention is much the same wherever you are in the country, we have made available to you items produced from outside West Yorkshire. Please remember that where the video is produced outside the West Yorkshire force area then if you require further help or advice you should contact West Yorkshire Police and not the police force who produced the video.

See videos page.
