IntroductionThere are a number a number of areas which you need to give attention to in order to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of vehicle crime. Due to improvements in vehicle security often the easiest way for a criminal to steal your car is by getting access to the keys. The easiest way to do this may be by breaking into your home, especially if you have left them on display and easily accessible. The best advice is to keep you car keys out of sight at all times and to take them to bed with you in the evening.Opportunist thieves may break into your vehicle if you have left valuables on display, e.g. your sat nav, your mobile phone or your iPod. Take valuables with you when you leave your vehicle, if at all possible. If you can't take them with you then put them out of sight in the boot. If you have a sat nav then make sure that you clean and remove any tell-tale marks on the windscreen, left by the suction device, when you remove it. The West Yorkshire Police website has really useful advice on the following aspects of vehicle crime:
LeafletsThere are a number of leaflets and booklets available which give good advice on vehicle security. These are usually available from your police crime prevention officer. Some of these are available electronically and we have provided them here for you. See leaflets page.
VideosThere are a number of good vehicle security videos and cartoons available, which have been produced by a variety of sources and police forces. As crime prevention is much the same wherever you are in the country, we have made available to you items produced from outside West Yorkshire. Please remember that where the video is produced outside the West Yorkshire force area then if you require further help or advice you should contact West Yorkshire Police and not the police force who produced the video.
See videos page.
